Surfing at Jaws

For those of you not familiar with it, Jaws is a spot on the north shore of Maui (as opposed to the North Shore, the meccas of surfers, which is on Oahu) where the waves get tremendous. Huge. Big. Big Big.

It produces, as far as we know, the biggest waves (consistently) on the planet.

Surfing at Jaws would have been impossible before Laird Hamilton and the others developed foot straps and "tow in surfing" where jet skis are used to pull surfers up to the speed of the wave so they can catch it.

Tech Note: To catch a wave you have to be going at least as fast, and usually a little faster than the wave.

People who don't surf or play in the ocean really don't understand the power of a wave. Even the small ones will drill you into the sand or smack you with your board.

And the waves at Jaws can get to 120 feet. That's equivalent in height to a twelve story building, but weighs more.

I saw this video and just thought some of you might like to get a look.
